Reflection on the figures of the shepherds and the wise men

Image
Here’s a reflection I was asked to write for an Advent vocation discernment Zoom meeting on the theme of Shepherds + Wise Men.     The Shepherds + Wise Men (Compass in Advent - 18/12/20) Each group, in its own way and in its own context, responded to a call from God. We find the story of of the Shepherds in Lk 2 and the Wise Men in Mt 2. The Shepherds (Lk 2:8-20) It was not the most trusted profession, so why are they reported as being the first to witness the birth of this Saviour?  They were considered unclean and outside the law, not the poorest of the poor, but certainly mistrusted, sometimes making use of other people’s land to graze their sheep. But, as such, they chime well with Luke’s emphasis in his Gospel, where Jesus states that he came to save outcasts and sinners, people on the peripheries, as Pope Francis would say, people who would have been relatively uneducated. And yet, God saw something in them that he could work ...

Humility

Image
SFX Staff Bulletin - Chaplain’s Page (03/06/19) “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way!” (Mac Davis, 1980) A few of you will be old enough (sorry!) to remember this comedy song. For those who aren’t, here it is:     As you may have guessed, the assembly and form period theme for the week after half-term is Humility. It’s a term that in the Christian context generally gets contrasted with the sin of pride. But, personally, I like the interpretation that refers back to the word’s etymology and the latin “ humus ” or earth . Someone who is humble is someone who is grounded , down to earth . One of my favourite Catholic folk hymns from the 1980s quotes in paraphrase form the Old Testament prophet Micah (chapter 6, verse 8) on this topic: “This is what Yahweh asks of you, only this, That you act justly, that you love tenderly, That you walk humbly with your God .”   Walking ...

Vocation Sunday

Image
Today is Vocation Sunday. May we each hear the voice of God in our hearts, calling us to follow him in a way that is unique to each individual: our personal path to “life in all its fullness”. And may the Lord grant to religious orders and dioceses fresh vocations to the religious life and the priesthood, so that we might continue to make Jesus Christ "better known and loved" (Jean-Marie De La Mennais).

Happy (belated) Founder's Day!!

Image
Happy Founder’s Day to all in the Mennaisien Network! (it was actually yesterday, the  26th) A day when we celebrate the life of our principal Founder, Fr. Jean-Marie De La Mennais (1780-1860). This morning we had a Founder’s Day Mass for Yr. 7. After our weekly Monday staff meeting at the end of the school day, we provided a “verre d’amitié” for all the staff and a chance for them to meet and chat with all the Brothers of our community, including former Head, Bro. Francis (see photo). Later in the week we’ll have an own clothes day to raise money for our mission in Indonesia and there’s an ongoing art competition to design a poster for our bicentenary as a religious order next year. Myself and Bro. Peter are giving the assemblies this week.

Religious life in Europe? “It’s life, Jim, but not as we know it!”

Image
During the month of March I attended our General Chapter in Rome (nearly four weeks long) and it was a wonderfully positive, fraternal, hope-filled experience. Like with many congregations, our worldwide profile is shifting towards a "southern hemisphere" emphasis, but that does not mean there isn't life left in the north. Quite the opposite, in fact. "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it!!" We are responding to Pope Francis' call to "go to the peripheries" seeking ways to serve the poorest, most disadvantaged, most vulnerable young people, looking to respond to the needs of today's youth in the way that our Founders did 200 years ago (yes, we've got anniversary celebrations coming up). Recently-founded missions in war-torn South Sudan (a community + school - Ugandan Brothers), Mexico (Canadian Brothers, a French Brother for 6 months every year and a lay woman living in community together and serving the poor together), a new educ...

The writing of our “new page” has begun!!

Image
We have a NEW SUPERIOR GENERAL!! Bro. Hervé Zamor from Haiti (aged 51, since 2010 the Haitian Provincial). Our first ever southern hemisphere Superior General. There’s a real sense of excitement among us about how this could indeed be the start of a “new page” in the story of our congregation. With the Spanish having given him a “La Mennais - We’ll Never Walk Alone” scarf to wear for the photo shoot and it being both Paddy’s Day + our Liverpool community being today’s prayer intention in our Congregation Calendar, I think I might be singing “You’ll (or rather We’ll) Never Walk Alone” either at lunch or this evening :-) An Irish Picpus/Sacred Heart Father celebrated Mass for us this morning (his 2nd of the Chapter). Fr. David Reid, their Postulator General, a real character (a Dubliner who’s been in exile in the US most of his religious life). I think he’ll be with us for lunch. The craic’ll be mighty!!! ***** UPDATE: Indeed I did sing “You’ll/We’ll Never Walk Alone”. M...

Celebrating life as a Brother

Image
A couple of weeks ago we celebrated the 50th jubilee of Bro. Jacques Jouvance, member of our community in Liverpool. Bro. Jacques came to Liverpool upon his retirement as a teaching Brother in France in 2009, the year I transferred to our Southampton community. We've been in community together in Liverpool now since 2013. Jacques is a wonderful cook, green-fingered gardener and lovely company in community. This summer we went to World Youth Day together, helping to accompany a group of 120 French and Spanish young people. Twenty years ago this month I took my final vows as a De La Mennais Brother during a Mass at SFX College (it's 26 years since I started my life as a Brother). It's been a wild and wonderful ride since then. So many amazing experiences in the service of young people. It's been a privilege sharing them with the Brothers and lay people God has put on my path. And I've been so blessed to have made many friendships that continue to sustain and enrich me...

My Life As A De La Mennais Brother

Image
Here’s a clip that I’ve been a bit slow to publicise… It was commissioned by the lovely folk at the National Catholic Office of Vocation for England and Wales (Fr. Christopher Jamison osb and Sr. Cathy Jones) to be released online in time for Vocations Sunday in April as part of a set of different resources celebrating Consecrated Life, as this is the Year of Consecrated Life. Click here for the page where all these resources can be found. It shows different aspects of my life in community and work with young people.

Vocations Sunday - Pope Francis

Here’s the beginning of Pope Francis' letter for Vocations Sunday (last weekend). For the whole letter, click here . MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE 52nd WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS 26 APRIL 2015 - FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Theme: Exodus, a fundamental experience of vocation Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Fourth Sunday of Easter offers us the figure of the Good Shepherd who knows his sheep: he calls them, he feeds them and he guides them. For over fifty years the universal Church has celebrated this Sunday as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In this way she reminds us of our need to pray, as Jesus himself told his disciples, so that “the Lord of the harvest may send out labourers into his harvest” ( Lk 10:2). Jesus command came in the context of his sending out missionaries. He called not only the twelve Apostles, but another seventy-two disciples whom he then sent out, two by two, for the mission (cf. Lk 10:1-6). Since the Church “is by her very natu...

A meeting for the Province's youngest Brothers…

… at our Mother House in Ploërmel, Brittany. A chance for us to share experiences, offer each other support and plan for the future. We are very much "living joyfully" and haven't given up the fight.

Called + chosen - Vocation Sunday

Image
In honour of Vocation Sunday tomorrow here's an excellent post from DVO app. March 1 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace... 2 Tim 1:9 (NIV) Vocation - Part 1 What's your calling? Growing up in church this question was bandied about almost as much as "how are you today?" The urgency of the way in which it was always asked made me nervous. What IS my calling? Am I called? Am I one of th...

A vocation prayer

Here’s a Vocation Prayer that we wrote for the “Living Joyfully” events: Creator God, I am unique in your eyes and you love me more than I can ever imagine. Each day as I grow and develop, help me to discover the dream that could be. Let me find the time to hear your voice in my every day life. Give me the courage and strength to make those choices that bring me closer to you, following in the footsteps of your son, Jesus. Amen

"Living Joyfully" - a Vocations Festival @ Liverpool Met. Cathedral, Feb. 6th + 7th

Image
Preparations in our Vocations Network North-West core group  (and larger group of interested volunteers from about 20 different congregations) are stepping up for our 2-day "Living Joyfully" vocations festival event at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. See below 2 posters for the 2 days. The Friday event is aimed at young people aged 14-18 and will provide a useful complement to G.C.S.E. and A-Level R.E. work on vocation, religious commitment, religious life and the priesthood. Both days will be made up of workshop activities, games, live music, speakers, discussion groups, a question panel, and finish with a final liturgy. On the Saturday this will be the Saturday evening Mass (1st Mass of Sunday) celebrated by Archbishop Malcom McMahon. There will be about 50 Sisters, Brothers, religious order priests and diocesan priests present each day with displays around the Cathedral, as well as members of new ecclesial communities such as Chemin Neuf and Focolare, repr...

Following the call

Here’s a reflection on vocation/call by Don Schwager from his excellent collection of daily scripture reflections inspired by the readings of the Mass for that day, to be found at http://dailyscripture.net : Are you ready to follow the Lord Jesus wherever he may lead you? With the call the Lord gives the grace to respond and the strength to follow all the way to the end. Why does Jesus issue a challenge with the call? Jesus was utterly honest in telling people what it would cost to follow him. When a would-be disciple approached Jesus and said he was ready to follow, Jesus told him it would require sacrifice - the sacrifice of certain creaturely comforts. Jesus appealed to this man's heart and told him to detach himself from whatever might hold him back. Spiritual detachment is a necessary step for following the Lord. It frees us to give ourselves without reserve to the Lord and his service. While many of us may not need to give up the comfort of our own home and bed to follow...

Living Joyfully our lives as religious Brothers

Image
On Saturday I spent the day in London at Heythrop College with my good friend Bro.  Ben Foy  (De La Salle) discussing the celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life, religious life as Brothers/brothers to all, vocation ministry, safeguarding ministry, our shared spiritual heritage, etc...  We've been coming together for such sharing and discussion for about 15 yrs. now, in the past together with Bro. Michael Newman (St. John of God) who is now working in Africa. I always find our time together stimulating, encouraging and empowering. It gives me renewed confidence that it is worth persevering in my life as a consecrated Brother, that we Brothers STILL have an important role to play in the life of the Church, especially in our ministry with young people. These encounters give me hope and give me the courage to keep fighting the good fight. Bro. Ben Foy in front of Heythrop College, London.

Young adults in the Church - embracing their faith and standing up to be counted

Image
I am not alone in thinking that there is currently a generation of mature, confident, spiritually strong young adults aged roughly 18 to 30 that seems ready to follow God's call and commit to particular services in the Church (whether in lay ministry or religious life or priesthood) on a level not seen for a long time. Those of us who sense this feel that there is something quite exciting rising up in the Church, signs of new growth giving hope for the future. Since signing up on behalf of our Brothers as a participating congregation on the American VISION Vocation Match service, managed by the American National Office for Vocations, I have received a regular flow of questionnaires sent by people throughout the US, as well as from further afield, including some from near us here in the north of England. On top of this I seem to also be receiving more frequent requests for information about our congregation from people who stumble across this blog or my website (that links to th...

Surrendering ourselves to God

There's a lovely article over on the wonderful  Mute Swan  website that addresses the question of discerning God's calling. Here's the start of the article with a link to read the rest of it:  This summer I have had many wonderful visits with my nephews–all grown men now, on journeys of their own. But I have watched the struggle they are engaged in to discover their gifts. It seems particularly challenging for young men, in today’s culture, to find their ‘profession’. What if, instead of asking, ‘how can I pay my rent?’ (perhaps today’s question) or being paralyzed by the BIG question, ‘what is my life work?’ we came to God each morning, surrendering ourselves to His guidance to discover our gifts? http://themuteswan.org/2014/07/11/spiritual-gifts/

Vocation Sunday 2014

Image
What is your own personal vocation? Spend time today listening to the promptings of the Spirit in your heart. Trust Him. "Each of you has a personal vocation which He has given you for your own joy and sanctity. When a person is conquered by … the fire of His gaze, no sacrifice seems too great to follow Him and give Him the best of ourselves.” Pope Benedict XVI (Thanks to Middlesborough Diocese Youth Mission Team for the following quote + picture) "Let us dispose our hearts therefore to being “good soil”, by listening, receiving and living out the word, and thus bearing fruit. The more we unite ourselves to Jesus through prayer, Sacred Scripture, the Eucharist, the Sacraments celebrated and lived in the Church and in fraternity, the more there will grow in us the joy of cooperating with God in the service of the Kingdom of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. And the harvest will be plentiful, proportionate to the grace we have meekly welcomed into our lives." - ...

Is God perhaps calling you to a particular vocation within the Church?

Is God perhaps calling you to a particular vocation within the Church? If you would like to meet other young adults asking themselves the same question and have the opportunity to spend some time with a few priests and members of different congregations, female and male in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, come along tomorrow to St. Anne's Church, Overbury Street, Liverpool from 1pm to 7pm (finishing with Sat. evening Mass at 5.30pm) For more details click here .
