God You don't need me, but somehow You want me - Tenth Avenue North, “Control”

I sent the below message to my teaching colleagues in school this evening, braced as we are for the arrival of “those-who-shall-not-be-named” (i.e. OFSTED, national school inspectors) sometime between now and Easter. For those of you who live outside of Britain their job is to monitor and ensure high standards in all schools… the problem is that they keep moving the goalposts.
Anyway, enough of that. Here’s what I said:

I think that the attached video teaching is for us right now, to help us not lose sight of who we are and why we are here in a Catholic school. It's too late for the weekend just gone, but try to take on board its message of "wasting time for God" over the coming weeks, despite the pressures that we are all under.

Even if you are not a believer yourself, give yourself some time alone with your thoughts, if you can… even just a few minutes.

The video teaching is by one of my favourite bands, Tenth Avenue North, and it accompanies a song of theirs that has just reached No. 1 in the US Christian chart (a big deal over there). After the teaching video, I give the song lyrics and a link to the song itself. As a song, it's not their most original (David, it's another 1-5-6-4 !! ), but the lyrics seem to have struck a chord (sorry!!) with people.

Control - Tenth Avenue North

Here I am, all my intentions
All my obsessions,
I wanna lay them all down
In Your hands
Only Your love is vital
Though I'm not entitled
Still You call me Your child

God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To take my hands off of my life and the way it should go
(Oh) God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To open my hands up and give You control
I give You control

I've had plans, shattered and broken
Things I have hoped in, fall through my hands
You have plans to redeem and restore me
You're behind and before me
Oh help me believe

God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To take my hands off of my life and the way it should go(
Oh) God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To open my hands up and give You control

You want me, somehow You want me
The King of Heaven wants me
So this world has lost its grip on me(Repeat)

God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To take my hands off of my life and the way it should go
(Oh) God You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh how You love me, somehow that frees me
To open my hands up and give You control

I give You control
You want me, somehow You want me
The King of Heaven wants me
So this world has lost its grip on me
